Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to rejuvenate the eyes by reducing the lines and wrinkles and removing the droopy or tired look of the eyes. Eyelid surgery may be performed on lower or upper eyelids, or both, depending on the patient’s needs. Ptosis correction may also be involved in a few cases. Brow lift, forehead lift, or other facial procedures can be combined with blepharoplasty, depending on the patient’s needs.
Eyes are not just a prominent part of the face from an aesthetic viewpoint, but also constitute the most sensitive area where a cosmetic procedure may be performed. Therefore, the patients should only choose a fully trained and experienced plastic surgeon to perform blepharoplasty. Dr. Thomas Fiala is a board certified plastic surgeon providing cutting edge eyelid surgery and other procedures. They receive patients from Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding locations.

Candidacy

Women and men above the age of 18 are usually eligible for eyelid cosmetic surgery procedures, but most candidates are above the age of 30 who choose this surgery. If an individual is bothered by the appearance of droopy or tired looking eyes, puffy upper eyelids, dark circles below the eyes, or under eye bags, they may benefit from blepharoplasty. If an individual has baggy eyelids at a younger age due to heredity factors, they may choose this procedure once they have completed the age of 18.

Types of Eyelid Surgery

Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper blepharoplasty is a relatively more common aesthetic eyelid surgery procedure. The surgeon will correct the inflated and droopy appearance of the upper lids by reducing excess skin and fatty tissue. Some patients may suffer from partial vision obstruction if the upper lids are heavily sagging. This condition can be corrected at the time of upper blepharoplasty. Weak underlying muscles may also be tightened or repositioned in some cases.

Lower Eyelid Surgery
If the patient is unhappy with the presence of excess fat tissue underneath the lower eyelid, they may choose lower eyelid surgery. The plastic surgeon will create a small incision to take out or redistribute excess fat in order to create a smoother and more even looking skin. If loose skin exists around the lower eyelid, it will be removed to create a tighter and younger looking skin above the cheek.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty
Some patients may only suffer from a limited problem of under eye bags, which can be corrected with this conservative procedure. Only the excess fat tissue from around the eyelids will be removed in this case, while the skin will not be excised. Tiny incisions will be made only within the lower eyelid, which will avoid any external visible scarring. Patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive eyelid surgery from Dr. Fiala.

Recovery

Most patients are likely to experience mild irritation and soreness in the incision areas during the first three to five days. In about one week, healing should be completed to a point where the patient can return to their normal household activities or go back to work.
