Botox vs. Dermal Fillers

Botox vs. Dermal Fillers

Posted on January 3, 2021

The face is the most visible and defining part of the body from an aesthetic perspective. Aging, sun exposure, genetics, disease, and other factors can cause the onset of wrinkles, creases, and fine lines on the face. One of the first non-surgical med spa treatments to be approved by the FDA for wrinkle reduction was Botox. It has continued to remain the most popular injectable anti-aging facial treatment since then.
In recent years, the FDA has also approved a number of dermal filler injectables for cosmetic reduction of facial signs of aging. The emergence of these fillers has transformed the world of non-surgical cosmetic treatments. Millions of people receive Botox and dermal filler injections every year in the US. Fiala Aesthetics Medical Spa is a premier facility providing Botox as well as facial fillers to patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding communities.

Important Distinctions

While both Botox and cosmetic filler med spa treatments are aimed at addressing the facial signs of aging for a limited period of time, but both are distinct from each other in several significant ways.
Composition
Botox injections are based on botulinum neurotoxin, which is a highly powerful biological substance. The toxin blocks the nerve signals from reaching the wrinkle forming muscle, which causes the muscle to relax. As soon as the muscle goes into a relaxation mode, the surface of the skin becomes smoother and the wrinkles and fine lines fade away. This makes Botox a neuromodulator, which is injected directly into the targeted muscles on the face for desired effect.
Dermal soft tissue fillers, on the other hand, may include hyaluronic acid as the key ingredient. Unlike Botox, these fillers are created in gel form to add instant volume to the treated areas of the face. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin, which helps to hold the skin together and induces the production of fresh collagen in the skin.
When a dermal filler gel such as Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, or Juvederm Voluma is injected into the deeper layers of the skin, it produces sustainable anti-aging and volumizing effects.
Areas of Treatment
Fiala Aesthetics Medical Spa, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Fiala, provides Botox as well as filler injections to patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby areas. The FDA has approved Botox for the reduction of wrinkles and fine lines between the brows and on the forehead. It also recently approved Botox for the cosmetic reduction of crow’s feet around the eyes.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are typically designed to minimize moderate to severe wrinkles and creases in various areas of the face. They may also be used for lip augmentation, smile line reduction and minimizing the appearance of nasolabial folds. Some fillers can also be used to add volume to the cheeks, and even perform mild enhancements to the shape of the nose or chin.

Sustainability

Results with Botox usually last for about three to six months. In case of dermal fillers, the results may sustain from six months to two years, depending on the choice of filler.
