Deciding which implant size to use or how big to go is extremely personal and is never a “one size fits all” situation. This blog provides guidance and answers questions you may have when deciding on the right breast implant size for your desired aesthetic goals.

What Are the Most Common Breast Implant Sizes?

Breast augmentation is a customizable procedure that can be tailored to a patient’s specific needs and desires. During an initial consultation, you and your plastic surgeon will work together to decide what implant size and material type will work best for your body type and desired outcome.

Breast implant sizes are usually referred to according to their volume, which is measured in cubic centimeters (CCs), and their shape, known as the “implant profile.” In the past, surgeons typically picked implants based on the volume change that patients requested. Nowadays, most surgeons, including Dr. Fiala, find that matching the width of the implant to the width of the patient’s breast tissues works better to give a proportional result.

Typically, a 150-200cc size increase results in a one-cup size appearance. This varies with the patient’s band size of their bra. Most patients choose an implant size within the range of 275cc to 450cc to achieve their desired augmentation results. In general, implant sizes that are popular today are a little smaller than what was used 15–20 years ago.

Are Smaller or Larger Breast Implants Better?

Everyone has a unique body type and their own taste regarding what looks the best, so there is no definitive answer as to whether larger or smaller breast implants are better. Some people may want a subtle augmentation, while others desire a more dramatic transformation. Your size choice ultimately comes down to your desires, body measurements, and the guidance of your surgeon.

One advantage of choosing a smaller breast implant size or a low to moderate profile (shape) is that your results will likely look more natural. Women who want to look curvier commonly pick a high or ultra-high profile implant in a larger size. It’s all a matter of a patient’s personal taste. Ultimately, it comes down to your preference and whether it’s possible for your tissue to safely accommodate your desired implant size.

Pros and Cons of Breast Implant Sizes

To help you decide whether it’s better to get a smaller or a bigger implant, consider their pros and cons:

Smaller implants:

  • Typically avoid an overly rounded appearance, making augmentation appear more natural.

Bigger implants:

  • Can give a curvier, fuller shape.
  • Are heavier. Very large implants may impact activities like running or exercising.
  • Over time, heavier implants may cause more tissue stretch.

Choosing the Implant Size That’s Right For You

Breast augmentation can enhance your appearance by altering the size and shape of your breasts. There are several factors to consider in deciding on the implant size:

  • Torso size
  • Body frame
  • Skin capacity
  • Breast tissue
  • Cleavage preferences

You may also want to consider putting silicone implant sizers in your bra to see which size suits you best. Your frame will also influence your decision. More petite frames benefit from a narrower implant. If you’re taller or have a broader frame, a more generous size can be used without looking disproportional.

Besides the implant size, some other factors to consider include:

  • Implant Shape: If you prefer a rounder look or want more cleavage, consider a higher-profile round implant.
  • Personal Preference: Although your surgeon can help you decide which implant shape and size to use for the surgery, know that it’s still a personal decision. Just make sure you are confident with your choice prior to your procedure.

Looking at a surgeon’s before and after gallery can be helpful when deciding how much volume you want to add to your implant. Try to find a patient who has a “before” photo that looks like your own size and shape.
