ASPS & Jewel

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and four-time Grammy nominee singer-songwriter Jewel are teaming up to promote breast reconstruction. Studies show that only a relatively small percentage of breast cancer patients know about their breast reconstruction options.
“Each year nearly 150,000 women learn they undergo a mastectomy due to breast cancer,” Jewel said. “But seven out of 10 women are never told about their breast reconstruction options. And the numbers are even worse for minorities. That needs to change.”
Jewel will be performing a charity concert in New Orleans on Monday, October 29. Along with her most popular hits, Jewel will perform the song “Flower” written for breast cancer patients.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, or BRA Day USA, is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness and access regarding post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. BRA Day was first launched in 2011 in Canada and now will occur annually on the third Wednesday of October. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Plastic Surgery Foundation, plastic surgeons specializing in breast surgery, nurse navigators, medical device industry representatives and breast cancer support groups. These and other organizations, breast cancer patients, their families and friends coordinate events on BRA Day USA that include question and answer sessions, lectures, flash mobs, fundraising parties, advertising campaigns and community events.
