Know Your Surgeon – Know Your Surgeon’s Credentials
Plastic surgery is a delicate and exacting medical specialty that requires many years of training and experience to achieve high levels of skill.
Your choice of a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon is perhaps the single most important decision in the overall success of your surgery. But due to a large loophole in Florida law, cosmetic procedures can be legally performed by physicians who are not even trained in plastic surgery, and sometimes not even trained in surgery at all. It makes things very confusing for the consumer. A “cosmetic surgeon” is not the same as a “plastic surgeon”, when it comes to training, even though they sound similar!
Do your homework. Always check the credentials of your surgeon. Always ask: Did the surgeon complete proper training – an accredited residency – in plastic surgery? Or was it in some other field? If the surgeon claims to be “Board-certified”, ask for the details. Get the name of the certifying board. Plastic surgeons in the US are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In Canada, they are certified in Plastic Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Fiala is certified by both organizations. You can check for yourself by going to www.CertificationMatters.org.
