Know your surgeon – know your surgeon’s credentials
By its very nature, plastic surgery is a delicate and exacting medical specialty requiring years of training and experience to achieve proficiency. Naturally, you would want a properly trained and credentialed plastic surgeon to perform your surgery, or that of your loved ones, right?
Due to a large legal loophole, cosmetic procedures can be legally performed by physicians who are not even specifically trained in plastic surgery, and sometimes not even trained in surgery at all. While this is permitted by Florida law, it can be very confusing for the consumer. Do your homework. Always check the credentials of your surgeon. Always ask: Did the surgeon complete an accredited residency in plastic surgery? If the surgeon claims to be “Board-certified”, ask for the details and the name of the certifying board. Just like when you take an airline flight, you expect your pilots to be trained, certified, and highly experienced. Make sure your surgeon is too. You can check for yourself by going to www.CertificationMatters.org.
Your choice of a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon is perhaps the single most important decision in the overall success of your surgery.
For example, Dr. Fiala is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of both ASPS and ASAPS, the two national plastic surgery societies, and has hospital privileges at Orlando Health to perform plastic surgery. He has been in practice in Orlando for over 20 years. In addition, he is a Past-President of the Florida Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a member of voluntary faculty at the UCF College of Medicine.
