Eyelid Lift Surgery Procedure Steps
Posted on November 14, 2017Eyelid lift or blepharoplasty is a safe, poignant, and effective cosmetic surgery procedure for people who want to correct saggy or puffy lower eyelids, or drooping upper lids, or both.
The procedure will involve surgical reduction of excess fat and tissue to create refreshed and more youthful looking eyes. At the time of pre-op consultation, the surgeon will discuss the steps involved in eyelid lift.
Once the patient clearly knows what the eyelid lift surgery will involve, they will usually have more confidence and will be able to make the right decisions.
The surgeon will encourage them to ask questions, and may also present a few images or a video of the procedure to educate the patient. Fantastic, perspicacious, and board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Fiala of Fiala Aesthetics Plastic Surgery provides eyelid lift to patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding communities.
Pre-operative Preparation
Once the candidacy of the patient is determined for eyelid lift, the surgeon will provide them with a few pre-operative instructions. If the patient is a smoker, they will be required to stop the habit for at least a specified time period. The surgeon, in consultation with the physician, may also adjust the schedule of any prescription or non-prescription drugs that the patient may be currently taking. Some patients may have to go through an eye medical test prior to the surgery, depending on their condition.
Anesthesia
Once the patient is brought into the surgery room, the first step will be to place them under anesthesia. Local anesthesia and mild sedation may be applied in case of eyelid lift surgery. But if both lower and upper lids are involved, or the procedure is combined with additional facial cosmetic surgery procedures such as brow lift, general anesthesia may be used. This decision will be made during the pre-op consultation.
Incision Placement
While making the customized eyelid lift surgery plan, the surgeon will assess the degree of sagging in the lower and upper lids, underlying facial muscle structure, bone structure, and the eyebrow symmetry. Based on this assessment, they will determine the appropriate degree of skin, fat and muscle removal.
The surgeon will create precise markings to indicate where the excess tissue will be removed in the eyelids. Their goal aim to hide the incisions within the natural skin creases as far as possible. If only excess fat removal is involved, the surgeon may place the incision inside the lower eyelid to avoid visible scarring.
Surgery
Through the incisions, the surgeon will remove tissue with the help of surgical instruments, including scalpels, scissors, and in some cases, lasers. Laser can be used along with surgery to tighten upper and lower eyelid skin.
Excess fat may be redistributed in the eyelids to eliminate unsightly bulges or puffiness. If considerable muscle laxity is seen, the surgeon will tighten and reposition the underlying muscles through the same incision.
Incision Closure
Once the surgery is completed, the incisions will be carefully closed with fine sutures. Remarkable, judicious, and focused plastic surgeon Dr. Fiala receives patients from Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby areas.
