Orlando Medical Spa | Altamonte Med Spa | MicrodermabrasionMicrodermabrasion is one of the most popular skin treatments available today. The combination of skin exfoliation and slight vacuum stimulates fibroblasts (collagen cells) to produce new healthy, living cells in the superficial layer of your skin. It is a quick treatment with virtually no down-time. You can even have it performed during your lunch hour!

The first microdermabrasion system was developed in Italy in 1985. Fine particles, usually of aluminum oxide, are used to cleanse the skin, removing dead cells from the outer layer of the skin, the so-called stratum corneum. Since only a microscopic amount of skin is removed, the technique can be used widely over the body – face, chest, neck, and hands all respond well to treatment.

Microdermabrasion FAQs

Where is microdermabrasion performed?
Microdermabrasion is performed in our office at Fiala Aesthetics Medical Spa and the treatment requires no anesthesia. Using a precision handpiece that directs a stream of very fine, chemically inert crystals and mild suction where needed, the gently abrasive action exfoliates the outermost layers of your skin.  Some people say it feels like being licked by a cat! The licensed aesthetician performing the procedure can control the power of the treatment, from a gentle buffing of the skin to deeper exfoliation if necessary.

What results can I expect?
Some patients report visible results after their first microdermabrasion treatment but like many other skin rejuvenation procedures, optimal results often take a series of treatments. Depending on the patient, the number of treatments normally recommended for maximum results can range between 5 and 12, spaced 2-3 weeks apart. Microdermabrasion may also be combined with a light chemical peel to increase the effect.

What will my skin look like after my microdermabrasion treatment?
You will be able to return to your daily life without any problems after your microdermabrasion. Following the treatment, your skin may appear slightly pink, but there is no oozing or obvious redness. Some patients say their face feels as if their skin has been deeply cleansed and your skin may peel mildly. In the case of a deeper treatment level, or for those people with sensitive skin, the skin will appear slightly red for a few hours after the procedure.

What are some of the risks of microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is very safe. Side effects for microdermabrasion are rare but some patients have reported symptoms including swelling and redness for several hours. With devices utilizing suction handpieces, there is a possibility of bruising from the suction, which too is temporary.

What can I expect the day of my treatment?
Each treatment lasts from 30 minutes to one hour and does not require anesthesia. During the procedure, the skin is exfoliated and smoothed while dead skin cells are removed. All details will be explained in detail during your initial consultation.

Do the treatments hurt?
Most patients find microdermabrasion quite a pleasant experience. The microdermabrasion handpiece will be passed over your skin and you will begin to feel a mild scratching as the procedure removes the superficial skin cells. This scratching will soon pass and a vibrating sensation, akin to a massage, will set in. Following the session, your skin will feel smoother and tighter and most patients notice very mild if any discomfort.

Who would benefit most from microdermabrasion treatment?
The best candidates for microdermabrasion are women and men who want to:

  • Improve their general appearance
  • Maintain healthier skin
  • Reverse sun damage
  • Look their best
  • Stimulate the natural production of collagen

Who can not be treated?
Microdermabrasion is a safe, common, non-surgical procedure although there are people who should not have it. People with active herpes lesions, active acne or rosacea, open sores or lesions, dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, lupus, and people using Accutane within the last 6 months should not have microdermabrasion.

What precautions should I take after my treatment?
Following any microdermabrasion treatment, it is important to use sunscreen as your skin will be very sensitive to sun exposure. Also, moisturizing the skin is helpful, as the microdermabrasion session will dry your skin temporarily. Avoid heavy makeup, such as liquid or pressed powder foundations for 24 hours however, you can use eye makeup or lipstick immediately after your treatment.
