What is Restylane?
Restylane is a dermal filler used to restore volume and fullness for wrinkles and folds. Restylane is made of hyaluronic acid gel, a biodegradable substance that is naturally produced in all living things. Restylane is one of the safest fillers currently available.
How is Restylane® different from BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Restylane is a natural cosmetic filler. In contrast, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a drug that relaxes the underlying muscles. Restylane fills in wrinkles by depositing a gel-like substance under the wrinkle. BOTOX Cosmetic® does not fill, but affects the muscle’s ability to contract. Cosmetic fillers are better at treating static wrinkles, while BOTOX injections are better for dynamic wrinkles. Although they are different, many patients have been very pleased after receiving treatment with both products.
How are Restylane injections performed?
The procedure can be broken down into three steps, which include:
- Based on your consultation, first one or more injection points are selected for each location to be treated. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, you may choose to be numbed with a topical or injectable local anesthetic.
- The correct amount of Restylane to be used will be determined.
- The Restylane filler will be injected directly into your skin in tiny amounts with an ultrafine needle.
Depending on the area to be treated, the procedure normally takes approximately 30 minutes.
What are the benefits of Restylane?
Choosing to have Restylane injection treatments offers not only the reduction in lines and wrinkles associated with the aging process, but it also provides lubrication and moisture to your skin making it look and feel healthier.
What is recovery like?
Although side effects are rare, they may include swelling, redness, bruising, pain, and tenderness. These symptoms usually disappear after a few days and most individuals who have Restylane treatments do not require any recovery time and may return immediately to their daily activities.
Bruising may occur after any cosmetic injection and may last from a few days to a couple of weeks. To minimize the risk of bruising, refrain from taking aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve and/or alcohol before and after your treatment.
Is Restylane safe?
Restylane is safe and has been used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons since 1996 worldwide. Restylane is fully biocompatible and allergy testing is not required. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappears. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under the age of 18, you should not use Restylane.
How long does Restylane last?
Restylane is proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane effects generally last for approximately four to eight months. Treatments are typically scheduled twice a year and having a touch-up treatment before the product has fully dissipated may enhance the lasting effect.
