Vaginoplasty (Vaginal Plastic Surgery) Overview
Posted on October 23, 2015Vaginoplasty
Vaginoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to improve the appearance of the vagina through a combination of surgical correction, fat reduction, and rejuvenation techniques. The appearance of the vagina may cause concern to some women in terms of sexual aesthetics or when it causes obstruction or discomfort in performing sexual or certain other activities.
Vagina may undergo changes due to developmental reasons, aging, or birth related trauma. If the labia are enlarged or torn, it may cause pain during sex, chafing, and generally make a woman feel self-conscious or unhappy.
What is a Vaginoplasty?
A vaginoplasty cosmetic surgery may include reduction in the size of labia minora and labia majora, or correction in the shape of the labia. A skilled surgeon may also combine innovative non-surgical techniques such as dermal fillers in some cases to rejuvenate the overall appearance of the vagina. It is important to ensure in vaginoplasty that enhancement in sexual aesthetics should not come at the cost of reduction in natural sensation in the area.
Therefore, such procedures should only be performed by highly trained surgeons who understand the vaginal anatomy. In some cases, apart from aesthetic improvements, vaginoplasty may also address functional issues such as repairing of torn vaginal tissue following childbirth.
Procedure
In many cases, the vaginoplasty procedure will be performed with the patient under local anesthesia and IV sedation. The surgeon will excise the targeted amount of excess tissue from the inner and outer vaginal lips as per the surgical plan decided in advance. Once the loose skin and tissue is carefully removed, the labia will be re-draped to create a desirable contour. The surgeon will use fine sutures to repair the tissue delicately.
The technique involved in labial reshaping will usually be the wedge method or the trim method. The wedge method adopts a more conservative surgical approach. Only the central element of the labia minor is removed in this technique, while the lower and upper portions of the tissue remain untouched. This is a safer and less invasive surgical approach to vaginoplasty.
In a few cases, the surgeon may choose to follow the trim method. This involves removal of a greater portion of the tissue to achieve substantive aesthetic improvement. This technique may be employed to address the appearance of excessively large labia or in cases where the patient wants correction of the discolored appearance of the labial edge.
Clitoral Hood Reduction
Clitoral hood reduction may be performed as a part of vaginoplasty. It involves reduction in the amount of tissue covering the upper portion of the vulva. A small upside down “V” of tissue is excised from the vaginal area in order to expose the clitoris a little more. The procedure may help to improve a woman’s ability to achieve sexual satisfaction.
